Distillation removes everything that makes tap, bottled, and spring water unsuitable: dissolved minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron), chlorine, fluoride, bacteria, mould spores, and other contaminants, leaving only pure H₂O. Tap and spring water leave mineral deposits — limescale — that build up on the chamber walls, block the water path, contaminate the tubing, and ultimately reach your airways as mineralised vapour. Over time, mineral scale from non-distilled water shortens chamber life, damages the humidifier, and can void the manufacturer's warranty. Type 1 Hi Pure Water (NCCLS) grade — the same standard used in hospital sterilisers and laboratory medical devices.
