WatchPAT ONE Home Sleep Apnea Test — Full Overview

The WatchPAT ONE is a single-use, disposable home sleep apnea test developed by Itamar Medical, a company with a long track record in non-invasive sleep and cardiovascular diagnostics. Rather than requiring an overnight stay at a sleep lab, it lets you complete a full diagnostic sleep study from your own bed in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE. The device is worn on the wrist with a finger probe and (in the standard configuration) a chest sensor, and pairs with a dedicated smartphone app that guides you through setup, recording, and automatic data upload.

WatchPAT ONE is built around Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) signal technology — a method that reads the body's true physiological response to breathing disturbances during sleep, rather than relying only on airflow sensors the way many basic home tests do. This is what allows it to also assess central sleep apnea and Cheyne-Stokes respiration patterns, in addition to standard obstructive sleep apnea detection.

Key Features

🫁
PAT Signal Technology
Measures peripheral arterial tone via a finger probe, capturing the body's true response to breathing disturbances during sleep.
🌙
Full Sleep Staging
Identifies REM, light, and deep sleep, plus wake periods — data that basic home tests typically can't provide.
💤
Central Sleep Apnea Detection
Assesses central apnea and Cheyne-Stokes respiration patterns alongside standard obstructive sleep apnea indices.
📱
App-Guided Setup
The WatchPAT companion app walks you through fitting the device correctly, step by step, before you go to sleep.
🎙️
Snoring & Body Position
The integrated chest sensor tracks snoring intensity and sleeping position throughout the night.
🗑️
Fully Disposable
Single-use design means no shared equipment, no return shipping, and no cleaning or sterilization between patients.

How It Works

🫁 What the PAT Signal Actually Measures
The finger probe measures pulsatile volume changes in the fingertip arteries, which reflect vasomotor activity linked to sympathetic nervous system responses. Breathing disturbances during sleep trigger measurable changes in this signal — combined with oxygen saturation and actigraphy (movement) data, this gives a more complete physiological picture than airflow-only monitoring.
💤 Central Sleep Apnea Assessment
Independent clinical validation of Itamar Medical's PAT-based central apnea detection (evaluated at an AHIc threshold of 10 in a peer-reviewed multi-center study) found a sensitivity of 70.6% and specificity of 87.3%, with a negative predictive value of 90.6% — meaning it performs particularly well at correctly ruling out central sleep apnea when it isn't present. This data comes from the same underlying PAT analysis technology used across the WatchPAT product family.
📲 What Happens After Your Study
Once your overnight recording is complete, the app automatically uploads your data. It's then processed and reviewed, producing a full report covering your AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index), sleep stages, snoring and body position data, and any flagged findings — typically ready within 24 hours. From there, our team helps guide you toward the appropriate next step, whether that's a physician referral or moving into CPAP or BiPAP therapy.

Please note: WatchPAT ONE is a diagnostic aid intended for use under the guidance of qualified medical personnel — it does not replace consultation with a licensed physician. Results should always be reviewed with a doctor to confirm diagnosis and determine appropriate treatment. The device is not indicated for children under 12, or for patients weighing less than 30kg.

Common Questions

How accurate is WatchPAT ONE for central sleep apnea?

In independent clinical validation of the underlying PAT technology (evaluated at a diagnostic threshold of AHIc ≥ 10), sensitivity was 70.6% and specificity was 87.3%, with a negative predictive value of 90.6%. This means it's particularly reliable at correctly identifying when central sleep apnea is absent, and results should always be interpreted by a physician alongside your overall clinical picture.

Do I need the chest sensor, or just the wrist device and finger probe?

The chest sensor is what enables snoring and body position tracking. Without it, WatchPAT ONE still records PAT signal, oxygen saturation, and movement data, but won't capture snoring intensity or sleeping position. Your physician will typically specify which configuration is appropriate for your test.

How long does the test take, and when do I get results?

The test is worn for one night, recording for approximately 10 hours. After you remove the device in the morning, your data uploads automatically, and your full report — including AHI, sleep staging, and other indices — is typically ready within 24 hours.

Is this suitable for children?

WatchPAT ONE is indicated for patients 12 years of age and above (with some specific parameters, like PRDI, indicated only for ages 17+). It is not intended for children under 12 or for patients under 30kg/65lbs in weight. Always follow your physician's guidance for pediatric use.

What happens if my results suggest sleep apnea?

If your report indicates obstructive or central sleep apnea, our team will help guide you toward the appropriate next step — this may include a physician referral for further evaluation, or moving directly into CPAP or BiPAP therapy if that's what your doctor recommends based on your results.
