Why CPAP Machines Require Distilled Water — and Nothing Else
Every major CPAP and BiPAP manufacturer — ResMed, Philips Respironics, Fisher & Paykel — specifies distilled water and only distilled water for their humidifier chambers. This isn't a preference or a cautious recommendation; it is a clinical requirement backed by the chemistry of what happens when any other water type is used night after night in a heated humidifier.
When water is heated in a humidifier chamber and vaporised, minerals don't evaporate with it — they stay behind. With tap water, which in Dubai and across the UAE is among the hardest in the world (heavily mineralised due to the desalination process), every millilitre of water that evaporates leaves behind a microscopic residue of calcium, magnesium, and other dissolved solids. Over days and weeks, this accumulates as white or chalky limescale — first on the chamber walls, then in the water path leading to the tube, then in the tube itself. Limescale is not just an aesthetic problem. It provides a substrate for bacterial and mould growth, narrows the water path and reduces humidification effectiveness, and can cause the chamber to develop cracks or cloudiness that leads to early replacement. In some cases, using tap or mineral water voids the manufacturer's warranty.
Distillation — boiling water until it becomes vapour, then condensing that vapour back into liquid in a separate container — removes everything that stays behind in this process. Dissolved minerals, salts, bacteria, mould spores, chlorine, fluoride, and virtually all other contaminants remain in the boiling vessel. What condenses is pure H₂O. This is the same process used to produce water for hospital sterilisers, laboratory equipment, and medical devices that contact the respiratory tract — which is precisely the context of a CPAP humidifier delivering vapour to your airway at positive pressure all night.

How Much Water Does a CPAP Humidifier Use?
The amount of water used per night varies with room temperature, your humidification level setting, and your machine's heated tube setting if applicable. In a warm, air-conditioned Dubai bedroom with moderate humidity settings, most patients use between 100ml and 200ml per night. A 5 litre bottle provides approximately 25–50 nights of use depending on your individual settings — roughly 1–2 months of nightly therapy for most patients. The best practice is to fill the chamber to the maximum fill line before sleep and discard any remaining water in the morning — do not top up stagnant water from the previous night, as warm overnight water sitting in the chamber provides ideal conditions for bacterial growth even with distilled water.
🇦🇪 UAE tap water and CPAP: UAE municipal water is produced primarily by desalination and has notably high total dissolved solids (TDS) — the concentration of minerals is significantly above European or North American tap water. CPAP users who have used tap water in the past may already have visible white scale deposits in their chamber. To remove these: soak the chamber in a 1-part white vinegar to 3-parts distilled water solution for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with distilled water and air dry. Switch to distilled water exclusively from that point forward.
⚠️ Not for drinking. Distilled water has all minerals removed and is not recommended for drinking or cooking. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use bottled drinking water instead of distilled?
No — virtually all bottled drinking water sold in the UAE (Masafi, Evian, Volvic, Al Ain, Aquafina, etc.) is either spring water or purified water with minerals added. These all contain calcium, magnesium, and other dissolved solids that will build up as scale in your humidifier chamber. Only water labelled specifically as "distilled" is suitable. This product is the correct choice.
Can I use Reverse Osmosis (RO) water from my home filter?
RO water is close to distilled and is acceptable as a short-term alternative — it removes most minerals. However, home RO systems vary in quality and some allow through more dissolved solids than others. Distilled water is the safer, more reliable choice for long-term daily CPAP use and is the only type explicitly recommended by all major manufacturers.
Does distilled water prevent mould growth in my chamber?
Distilled water prevents mineral scale — which is what creates the rough surface that mould colonises. However, distilled water is not a disinfectant: mould prevention comes from your daily hygiene routine. Empty the chamber every morning, allow it to air dry during the day, and wash it weekly with mild soap and warm water. Fresh distilled water each night, never topping up stagnant water from the previous night.
I've been using tap water — has it already damaged my machine?
If you have used tap water for a period of time, your chamber likely has some white limescale build-up. To remove it: soak the chamber in 1-part white vinegar to 3-parts distilled water for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with distilled water and air dry completely. Switch to distilled water from that point forward. Persistent heavy scale that doesn't clear with vinegar treatment may indicate it's time to replace the chamber.
