Why Daily Mask Wiping Matters More Than Weekly Washing
Most CPAP users know they should wash their mask weekly. Far fewer realise that what happens between those weekly washes has a greater impact on mask performance and cushion lifespan than the wash itself. Every night, skin produces sebum — the natural oil that keeps your face moisturised. During 6–8 hours of sleep with a CPAP mask pressed against your skin, that sebum transfers onto the cushion surface in quantities significant enough to visibly break down the silicone's tackiness and sealing ability within days. By the time you do your weekly wash, the cushion has already spent 6 nights sealing against oil-contaminated silicone, producing increasingly poor seals and increasingly high leak rates as the week progresses.
ResMed designed these mask wipes specifically to address this daily maintenance gap. A single wipe takes 30 seconds — far less time than the seal issues, mask adjustments, and broken sleep that a degraded cushion seal causes. The wipes use a 100% cotton fabric saturated with an unscented cleaning agent and aloe vera that removes sebum, sweat, and organic residue from the cushion surface without stripping or hardening the silicone. Restoring the cushion to a clean, oil-free surface before sleep allows it to seat correctly against your skin and form the seal it was designed to hold. This measurably reduces leak rates, extends cushion life, and maintains the comfortable, soft feel that makes CPAP tolerable in the long run.
The formula is alcohol-free, latex-free, fragrance-free, and biodegradable — critical features for a product used daily on equipment that sits against your face for hours. Alcohol degrades silicone rapidly; these wipes contain none. The aloe vera in the formula also conditions the cotton wipe itself, making the wiping motion gentle on the silicone surface rather than abrasive. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these on my AirTouch F20 foam cushion?
Yes — and they are the only approved daily cleaning method for the AirTouch F20 memory foam cushion. The foam material cannot be rinsed or submerged in water. Wipe the foam surface gently each morning with one wipe and allow to air dry. Do not apply water or soap to the AirTouch F20 foam cushion.
Why can't I just use a regular wet wipe or baby wipe?
Many general-purpose wipes contain alcohol, fragrance, preservatives, or conditioning agents that degrade silicone, leave residue on the cushion that affects the seal, or contain chemicals you would then inhale all night with your mask on. ResMed's wipes are specifically formulated without any of these to be safe for daily use on mask materials in direct contact with your face and airway.
Do I still need to do a weekly wash if I'm wiping daily?
Yes — daily wipes remove surface oils and maintain the seal quality between washes, but they do not clean the frame, headgear, or the full inside of cushion ports. Weekly washing with warm water and mild soap remains necessary for thorough hygiene. The exception is the AirTouch F20 foam cushion, which uses wipes as the primary cleaning method — for foam, do not wash with water.
Which pack should I buy — 14 or 62?
Most patients buy the 62-pack tub as their primary home supply and keep the 14-pack sachets for travel. The 62-pack at AED 135 works out significantly more economical per wipe. The 14-pack sachets are individually sealed, staying moist in a bag or suitcase indefinitely until opened, making them ideal for overnight trips and long-haul travel with the AirMini or full CPAP kit.
